a Help for the Homeless” Campaign Contributes $7,600 Worth of Toiletries to Programs in Manitowoc ! First Year for the Program in Manitowoc
Five Manitowoc County programs - Lakeshore Interfaith Hospitality Network (LIHN), Domestic Violence Center, Salvation Army, Lakeshore CAP, and Project Youth – were the recipients of over $7,000 worth of new personal hygiene and household cleaning products as a result of WEMI 91.9FM & WEMY 91.5FM’s 16 th annual “Help for the Homeless” campaign. This was the campaign also took place in Manitowoc County, including sites in Manitowoc, Two Rivers, Brillion, Chilton and Kiel. Items were also collected in Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Appleton and Green Bay. A total of $73,600 worth of products was collected, benefiting 33 area homeless programs regionally. Major sponsors of the campaign were WFRV-TV Channel 5 and Festival Food stores. According to Heidi Prahl, Christian Family Radio, “Participation records were shattered this year with more than 250 area businesses, schools and churches joining in to contribute $73,600 worth of product – more than tripling last years total of $22,000! Donations remained in the communities where they were collected to help local agencies dedicate their limited financial resources to areas where they’re most effective – providing qualified personnel, safe housing, nutritious food, education, and counseling to those they serve.” The project worked through the Manitowoc Interagency Housing Committee to identify nearly 40 collection sites in Manitowoc. Area residents were encouraged to help their neighbors in need by donating new personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies during the campaign that ran from April 16 to March 13. “Our sincere thanks for the HUGE amount of donations we received through the Help for the Homeless campaign this year! We were sure what to expect for our first year in Manitowoc. Needless to say we were overwhelmed by the generosity of this community. The value of donated items collected locally during our first year nearly surpassed that collected in larger communities. The real value of these items can be realized on the faces of those who directly benefited – the clients our agencies serve.Something as simple as a new, full bottle of shampoo can rekindle a sense of hope and self worth for someone experiencing the hopelessness of personal crisis.” Sue Sippel, Executive Director, Manitowoc County Domestic Violence Center.
